2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup First Drive

Time to get excited for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup is on the top of the list of most fun vehicles of the year, if not ever. After General Motors president Mark Reuss urged his team to construct a rugged utility vehicle that would propel them into the future with their new electric powertrain, designers and engineers only had about 18 months to come up with a prototype. The end product is nothing short of spectacular.

It should come as no surprise that the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup is large, heavy, and inefficient for an electric vehicle. Weighing at over 9,000 pounds, with 3,000 from just its battery pack, you may believe it’s slower than it looks but that’s not the case. The Hummer EV is powerful and agile thanks to its instant torque from the electric motors. Adaptive ride control reads the road every 2 milliseconds with a network of sensors and adjusts the suspension to provide the smoothest ride possible.

With optional four-wheel steering, the turning circle shrinks from 44.3 feet to 37.1 feet, making it ideal for desert terrain or small parking spaces. The most recent iteration of GM’s Super Cruise, a top-of-the-line driving-assist technology, combines adaptive cruise control, steering aid, and lane-centering functionality to provide a practically autonomous driving experience. A new lane-change feature will monitor the speed of the car in front of you. If all is well, Super Cruise will automatically make the lane change, pass the slower vehicle, and cross back over.

There are two main driving modes: Off-Road and Terrain. Off-Road mode is for quicker speeds over dirt and gravel while Terrain mode is for slower, challenging routes. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup has approximately 12 inches of ground clearance in this mode, which is ideal for climbing rocks or driving through water. The optional “Extract” feature will even lift the vehicle to a maximum height of 15.9 inches.

Our favorite feature is the “Crab Walk”. This turns the rear wheels up to 10 degrees at the same angle as the front wheels, allowing the driver to see a direct point of view of the trail thanks to multiple camera angles and a 360-degree overhead view. The unique four-wheel-drive system allows the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup to climb 60 percent grades in both directions, scale 18-inch verticals, and cross two-foot-deep water. There’s also a virtual locking rear differential that changes the amount of power transmitted to each wheel to enhance traction.

Within its interior, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup is built with a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment center that’s graphically powered by Unreal Engine. In front of the driver is the instrument cluster which offers five themed layouts: Clean, Digital, Lunar, Off-Road, and Sport. The interior looks both modern and functional due to the combination of textured analog buttons and digital controls.

The Hummer EV Edition 1 starts at $110,295 and comes with a removable glass roof and a towing capability of up to 7,500 pounds. Reservations are fully booked, but the 830 horsepower Hummer EV3X is available and expected to be ready this fall. In the springs of 2023 and 2024, two less powerful dual-motor models are expected in the EV2x and EV2.
