Specifications For The Ducati V21L Prototype Electric Motorcycle Revealed

Finally, details have been released for the highly anticipated Ducati V21L prototype electric motorcycle

The new Ducati V21L prototype electric motorcycle will debut at the 2023 MotoE World Cup, and all of its technical specs have been released. Starting in 2023, Ducati will provide 18 identical battery-powered motorcycles to fill the grids for the competition, taking over for fellow Italian brand Energica.

Designed by the Centro Stile Ducati atelier, the Ducati V21L prototype electric motorcycle is built with a carbon-fiber bodywork and weighs 496 pounds. According to Ducati, it produces around 147 horsepower (110 kw) and 103 lb ft (140 Nm) of torque. On a test track in Mugello, Italy, the V21L was claimed to hit a high speed of 171 mph (275 kmh).

The large 19 kWh battery pack is made up of 1,152 cylindrical 21700 type cells, which are the same batteries that are used in Teslas. A twin circuit liquid cooling system that’s shared by the battery and motor/inverter enables the bike to run at high performance levels for longer periods of time without having to reduce throttle as a result of heat buildup.

Ducati states that the inverter weighs 11 lbs (5 kg) and is the typical component used in various types of electric car racing. In contrast, the motor is a custom Ducati design that weighs 46 lbs (21 kg) and spins up to 18,000 rpm. The motor uses a gear reduction system as confirmed by Ducati EMobility Director, Roberto Cane.

The high voltage 800v system is comparable to other high-performance electric vehicles and allows for less current to be drawn. 80 percent can be recharged in only 45 minutes. The chassis integrates the battery, which links the lightweight swing-arm and subframe to the aluminum monocoque front frame.

“As soon as I sat on the bike I realized the quality of the work done by the team and when I returned to the garage I felt a deep sense of pride for what we were once again able to achieve,” said Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali. Domenicali also stated that they will develop a production version of the Ducati V21L prototype electric motorcycle for the general public sometime after 2025.
