The new DeLorean Alpha5 EV is a legend in the making
DeLorean Motor Company have released the first images of their upcoming new DeLorean Alpha5 EV, and it’s more than just a blast from the past. With its iconic gull-wing doors, the Alpha5 is able to hit 60 mph in just under 3 seconds.
To give a brief history, the iconic DeLorean DMC-12 was the creation of John DeLorean, an automotive designer who created classic vehicles such as the Pontiac GTO. He created a unique wedge-shaped car with gull-wing doors and a louvered rear window, all throughout a stainless steel body. It became so popular that the DMC-12 became a cultural icon and was even featured in one of the biggest blockbuster films of the 1980s, Back to the Future.
Let’s zoom forward (or back?) to 2022. DeLorean Motor Company has collaborated with Italdesign, the same design team that created the DMC-12. Where the original DMC-12 is sharp and angular, the new DeLorean Alpha5 EV is smooth and curvy. The latter sports a streamlined front end with a low front splitter and large but thin LEDs. The Alpha5 sits four passengers with its beautiful two-toned style with black slats and a black roof.
According to the DeLorean Motor Company, the DeLorean Alpha5is estimated to go 0-60 mph in 2.99 seconds with a max speed projection of 155 mph. Range is estimated to be over 300 miles, but unfortunately, details about the power and battery have not been confirmed.
A fun new Fitbit-esque feature has been developed for the Alpha5. Customers will receive a heartbeat tracking wristband that’ll display its data on the car’s console screen. Then, seat heaters can be configured to match the body temperature of the wearer. The wearer can even tap the band to enable the driver’s seat bolsters to squeeze, which simulates a hug.
With a limited sale in 2024, the final price of the new DeLorean Alpha5 EV is still to be determined, but the company is expecting around $125,000. Officials from DeLorean Motor Company have stated the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan Turbo S as its competition.
