Take a closer look at the Makkina TR25 concept

In celebration of Triumph Motor Company’s 100th birthday of their beloved TR25, the Makkina TR25 concept has been introduced by the British design house. After a 40-year absence, the Triumph badge is finally on a brand new sports car.

This idea was inspired by the vintage Triumph TR2 from 1953. It was the first TR (Triumph Roadster) model and the first Triumph that America truly embraced. The TR25 draws from the famous Jabbeke TR2, which broke the world production-car speed record that same year. It reached 124.889 mph on the Jabbeke highway in Belgium.

Makkina attempted to update the aero-focused appearance of the TR2 for the present day while preserving as much of it as possible in the Makkina TR25 concept. Similar to the classic, the idea features small headlamps sitting atop the front end, a deep front intake, and a tonneau cover for the passenger seat.

The Makkina Triumph’s surface is a bit more angular, as it’s been constructed with a new aero fin that’s located behind the driver. In order to reduce weight, the cabin is likewise extremely simple, consisting only of a steering wheel, a pedal box, and a seat.

With its minimalistic interior, the redesigned Makkina Triumph appears to be concentrating on enhancing the driving experience. Those taller than six feet can find comfort because the steering wheel and pedals slide while the driver’s seat is fixed. The spoke steering wheel also references the Jabbeke TR2 and features a small digital binnacle positioned in the back.

The Makkina TR25 concept is completely electric with its rear-mounted electric engine and 42.2 kWh battery, directly from the BMW i3s. Its 181 horsepower output is twice that of its traditional predecessor. Its 2,414-pound lean curb weight allows it to reach 60 mph in 5.2 seconds.

“Our aim was to update the true character of the original record-breaking TR2 with our design, through both interior and exterior design,” said Michael Ani, director of Makkina. “Using the BMW i3S platform allows us to create a blend of old and new with the TR2-inspired body shape and the versatile and adaptable powertrain, creating a seamless, fully electric experience. The i3S platform proves that driving an electric car can be fun! The combination of instant torque, acceleration, agility and silence are as compelling now as ever.”
