The new Sunreef Explorer Eco 40M solar electric catamaran is here!

Debuting in the yard’s newest “solar skin” proprietary technology, the Sunreef Explorer Eco 40M solar electric catamaran has been revealed. The latest catamaran from Sunreef founder Francis Lapp was inspired by an adventure with South African adventurer Mike Horn.

The Explorer Eco 40M solar electric catamaran, which the Polish yard refers to as “the ultimate sustainable explorer yacht,” is equipped with a number of cutting-edge eco-friendly technologies that enable it to travel the world without emitting any emissions. The model is based on the 2020 Explorer 40m, but instead of the conventional diesel engines it utilizes an electric drivetrain.

“Exploring Greenland under sail with Mike has served as a profound source of motivation for me to continue to act for a sustainable future within the yachting industry,” said Lapp in a statement.

With the solar skin running throughout the superstructure and hull, this new cat features two hulls that are able to move with less drag than the typical monohull and two bows that easily take on waves for smoother, more efficient cruising. As a result, cruising on the multihull uses a lot less energy than on a traditional yacht.

With its ultralight composite construction and two 540kW motors and two 550 kWh battery packs, the new 40M generates enough clean energy to power its onboard systems, HVAC, AV equipment, and more.

“Sunreef has been at the cutting edge of sustainable yachting since its launch,” Lapp adds. “We are the only superyacht builder to have successfully developed the idea of embedding solar cells into large-scale fiberglass structures. But we’re not content to let technology alone do the work. Many elements of our wonderful, custom interiors can also be sourced from recycled and renewable materials. From hemp composite to recycled fabrics, it’s all up to the owner.

Ten guests and a crew of seven can be accommodated aboard the Sunreef Explorer Eco 40M solar electric catamaran. With its motors, it can reach a top speed of 14 knots and cruise at 10 knots. The electric yachts will be constructed at one of Sunreef‘s ports in the United Arab Emirates or Poland.
